Case study – Simulation for surface disinfection
Irradiation with UV-C LED systems is an effective approach to keeping heavily frequented rooms germ-free in addition to conventional sterilisation methods.
Simulation of the sterilisation of surfaces in a doctor's surgery:
- Medical practice: length = 4 m, width = 5 m, height = 2.5 m
- UVC irradiation with four linear high-performance "Violet" modules emitting at 280 nm
- Furniture: Instrument table (1), treatment couch (2), desk (3), cabinet (4) - different heights and surface sizes
For safety reasons, the UVC LED radiation sources can only be used when the room is empty (between treatment appointments) or overnight.

-
What is the optimum positioning of the UV-C LED modules?
-
How much optical power does the surface achieve?
-
How long does it take to inactivate viruses and germs?
-
How can it be ensured that there is no harmful contact with UVC radiation and people?
-
It is crucial to place the UV-C LED lights directly above the important surfaces to avoid shading, and in this simulation we have deliberately chosen a non-optimal arrangement to show the different range of results. - Cf. in the picture instrument table (1) placed directly under the UV-C lamp, vs. filing cabinet (4) on the wall, with little direct irradiation.the LUMITRONIX® team will advise you on the optimum placement of the UV-C modules in your specific application!
The simulation provides the result of how much optical power reaches the individual surfaces. The duration for effective sterilisation can be derived from this.
The "kill factor" of the UV-C radiation can vary greatly depending on the target organism. We have calculated the duration for disinfection (99.9%) on the defined surfaces (1 - 4) for two exemplary pathogens: for the bacterium E.Coli and the virus SARS CoV2.
This leads us to the conclusion that effective disinfection can be realised with the power and efficiency of UV-C LEDs, even at greater distances. A minimum time between treatment sessions or overnight allows effective sterilisation of surfaces.
At shorter intervals, individual microorganisms can be inactivated in a matter of seconds.
On request, you will receive a detailed list of the data on the optical performance on the defined surfaces (1 - 4) as well as our calculation for the pathogens mentioned. The simulation of UVC LED radiation propagation with the Violet lens in the defined room concept was carried out by LEDIL Tech Support.
There are important influencing factors that are not taken into account in an optical simulation, such as: room temperature, surface structure, humidity, etc. A metrological comparison of the simulation results with real measurement data is therefore necessary to verify the simulation.
265 nm
Maximum Germicidal Effect Through DNA Absorption
UV-C radiation at 265 nm offers one of the most effective methods for physical disinfection. Due to its proximity to the DNA absorption maximum, it achieves particularly high germicidal efficiency and is ideally suited for applications with stringent hygiene and purity requirements—from water treatment and industrial production processes to cleanrooms in high-tech manufacturing.
280 nm
Powerful and Technically Robust Disinfection
UV-C radiation at 280 nm provides a powerful and technically robust solution for modern disinfection systems. Although the DNA absorption maximum is closer to 265 nm, 280 nm systems stand out with higher optical output, long service life, and excellent integration possibilities.
This wavelength is particularly suitable for industrial applications where reliability, continuous operation, and compact system integration are critical—from water treatment and food production to medical devices and OEM disinfection modules.
UV LED luminaire VIOLET
Professional UV-C special light with different wavelengths and sizes
The VIOLET series offers powerful UV-C LED technology for professional applications - with wavelengths from 265 nm to 330 nm and in four sizes.
It features a robust, anodised aluminium profile with excellent heat dissipation, special LEDiL optics made of UV-resistant material and control LEDs for safe operation at 30 V constant voltage. It is supplied ready for connection with a 10 m supply cable.
